Over the course of the twentieth century, the progression of individual autonomy and the loss of the influence of the Catholic Church in Quebec, accompanied by the religious diversity introduced by multiculturalism, has profoundly transformed family law. Old legislation favoured the traditional conception of a nuclear family, based on marriage, in the name of overriding societal interests. The author argues that a new regime of family law is now in place, the principal objective of which is to assume the protection, notably the economic protection, of members of the family unit. This family unit, a central societal and cultural institution that was traditionally conceived as being under the absolute authority of the husband, can no longer escape the influence of individual liberty. Rather, the family is now defined by the fundamental values of equality and individual autonomy. Au Quebec, au cours du vingtieme siecle, la progression de l'autonomie individuelle et la perte d'influence de l'Eglise catholique, accompagnee de la concurrence religieuse induite par le multiculturalisme, ont profondement transforme le droit de la famille. Uancienne legislation visait a favoriser la conception unitaire de la famille, basee sur le mariage, au nom de l'interet superieur de la societe. L'auteur estime qu'il existe desormais un nouveau regime du droit de la famille, dont l'objectif principal est d'assurer la protection, notamment economique, des membres de la cellule familiale. Le corps familial, institution societale centrale, dont la conception traditionneUe et religieuse faisait reposer l'autorite absolue sur le mari, n'echappe dorenavant plus a la volonte individuelle et fonde ses grandes lignes sur les valeurs fondamentales que sont l'egalite et l'autonomie individuelle.
